I’M JOAN! AN LX DESIGNER, A MUM, & DONUT ENTHUSIAST.

I live with my husband and two boys on the surf coast outside of Geelong but am originally from inner city Melbourne. I’ve listened to the Mariah Carey Christmas album more times than I care to say and on any given Saturday, you’ll find me down by the beach with my boys.

As a former primary school teacher, I know the importance of technology in education and have a passion for the psychology behind how and why we learn online.

WHAT’S AN LX DESIGNER?

Have you heard of an instructional designer or learning designer or content creator? Although there are many different approaches within these roles, a Learner Experience Designer takes you on a journey away from content and focuses on the learner and the experiences within.

As an LX Designer, I work with educators to create a narrative for their content and design a learner experience that provides opportunities for learners to connect, create and collaborate. From the activities educators ask learners to do; to the formative and summative feedback opportunities, I am the critical friend that questions why you are building your course in a particular way. In doing so, I am also a change facilitator, to help educators rethink practices that have sometimes been embedded for decades.

I also know the value of technology and the impact it can have when integrated with a purpose to support and enhance the learner experience. As a result, I look at what the learners need to do and what needs to be achieved, to provide recommendations on what technology is most suited for particular contexts. I have a less is more philosophy when it comes to using technology, so I look for solutions that have as much functionality embedded within.

If you want to leverage my experience and have an evidence-informed approach in your next course, why not create an online course today.

WHY DESIGN4LX?

Have you ever completed an online course and thought, this doesn’t apply to me? Or, thought this is just a bunch of readings uploaded not considering my experience? Since COVID-19 there has been a rapid and in some cases, radical shift in the use of technology in education, and the overall experience is not always a great one. The experience is evolving and how and when learners interact needs to be considered.

Design for Learner Experience (Design4LX) recognises that the teaching and learning experience face to face is not the same as online or hybrid modes of delivery, so it needs to be designed for accordingly. With underpinning principles of connection, creation, and collaboration; Design4LX creates experiences that can be adapted for your context, making your dreams of an online course a reality.
