From Data to Danger: How AI is Shaping how we Design
In a recent exploration of the ethical boundaries of artificial intelligence, OpenAI investigates the potential of responsibly generating not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content. The article by Tom Simonite in Wired highlights OpenAI's efforts to address the significant ethical concerns associated with AI-generated NSFW material, particularly focusing on maintaining age-appropriate contexts. As AI continues to push the limits of content creation, the organization faces crucial questions about consent, privacy, and the implications of blurring real and AI-generated imagery.
Designing Learner Experiences: Authentic, Personalised and Interactive Design
As artificial intelligence becomes a part of your design process, it’s shaping how we learn and interact with information. It’s a call to action for LX Designers to reimagine how we create experiences; it’s no longer about traditional reading, or passively watching a video, it’s about engaging with content in a way that is authentic, personalised, and interactive. As you design for current and future students, it’s integral to consider what information they engage with and how they interact to inform your design. The three examples below are experiences I am sharing with you, and I invite you to think about how people around you are engaging with content and rethink how you design.
The Marvel Live Experience: A Testament to Shared Experiences
In our digitally saturated world, as both a parent and aunty, I was thrilled to discover the excitement of the Marvel Live show. Last weekend, I had the pleasure of watching this show with my sons and nephews; and the experience was wonderful. Despite the inherent challenges of keeping young children engaged for nearly two hours, the experience was a resounding success, highlighting the power of live entertainment and shared experiences in todays’ world.
Emotions, Engagement, and Education: Drawing Insights from Cricket
Discover the unexpected connection between cricket and learner experience design in this captivating summer tale. Explore how a parent's commitment to attending cricket matches sparks a profound reflection on engagement and its significance. Uncover insights on how hobbies like sports can shape our learning experiences and connect us to the world of education.
The Value of a Virtual Participant
Have you ever been a virtual participant and not be acknowledged? Or, have you been a virtual participant only to log in and not have a way of connecting with your peers? Or, have you been a virtual participant and wanting to engage, but not having the confidence, or felt the face to face contingent was more valued. Our educational landscape has changed and so too must our teaching practices regardless if it is for education or professional purposes. We have shifted from face to face, to online, to hybrid, to hyflex. No longer is it enough to have participants watch a presentation, or watch a lecture, and then engage with the LMS, it is about participation, active engagement, providing opportunities for a two way interaction.
From Denial to Acceptance: The LX Path to AI Adoption
In the rapidly evolving world of education technology, the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has sparked a full spectrum of emotions - from denial and resistance to acceptance and enthusiasm. As AI continues to play a significant role in the design of learner experiences, some designers, accustomed to traditional methods, might find themselves traversing the emotional path defined by the Kübler-Ross model, better known as the five stages of grief.
Understanding AI Ethics in Education
If the alignment problem is the challenge to ensure AI systems behave as they were intended too and ensure they're aligned to human value and goals (Christian, 2020); how do you as an educator ensure they are appropriate for your educational context?
The AI-lignment Problem: LX Design
Have you ever considered how the AI tools you are using could potentially cause harm if not aligned to human values? How can you ensure you are using tools responsibly and are aware of AI that isn't aligned to these values? The alignment problem highlights this.
The Power of Constructive Alignment: LX Design and AI
As an LX Designer, this is something we are required to do all of the time; to take complex ideas and present the ideas in a clear, and organised way that is meaningful for learners. To do this, we need to understand what does the learner need to know, what do they need to do and how can they demonstrate their knowledge through scaffolded activities. In doing so, we are creating an aligned learner experience. If this is not done, learners can be left confused and unable to grasp foundational concepts, so it is important to understand constructive alignment.
Using Visual Mapping to Design Learner Experiences
Yesterday I had the pleasure of facilitating a workshop for the IDTX community around designing learner experiences. It was great to see such a good turnout with many participating on the mural board.
AI Is Bigger Than ChatGPT
I have heard many discussions around ChatGPT and it being used interchangeably with AI. Whilst it is leading the discourse of AI in education at the moment, it is important that you realise that ChatGPT is another tool, a powerful one at that. To understand why it is leading the discourse, lets take a look at how quickly the uptake of ChatGPT was.
Understanding AI: An LXD Perspective
As an LX Designer, it is up to you to be able to understand AI, and the different tools that use the underpinning technology, including ChatGPT so you can leverage it in your role rather than think that it is going to replace you. But how do you do this?
Cyberpsychology and Why it Matters for Education
As the use of technology continues to rise in our daily lives, so too does it in education where it is an integral part of the learning process. Both educators, and learners are relying on technology to aid in the teaching and learning process. Since cyberpsychology studies the impact of technology on human behaviour, it has the potential to help us to understand how technology can be used to improve learning outcomes. With the current discussion around ChatGPT and its' implications, we are seeing how technology can really have a detrimental impact on the teaching and learning process. By understanding cyberpsychology more, we could better understand how students learn in an online environment, or how it can be used to foster collaboration, creativity and/or problem-solving skills.
How to Create a Podcast: 6 Simple Steps
Podcasts have become one of the most popular ways to consume content. Over the years, podcasts have been growing in popularity, and more and more people are talking about creating a podcast. Although it is exciting, it can also be very daunting at the same time as it can take a lot of time and effort to create a successful podcast, but the rewards are well worth it. In this blog post, I'm going to take you through my journey of podcast creation and share 5 things I learned along the way.
AI versus IA: What’s the Difference?
When we talk about the future of Education, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the way it can be leveraged is something that is exciting and generating a lot of interest. It is also fair to say that there is some concern around what AI will be able to do and how it may take over our jobs. This is somewhat true however, what I don't think people are as familiar with is the notion of Intelligence Augmentation (IA) which is the process of using technology to enhance human capabilities.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the new disruptor everyone’s talking about. It’s a buzzword that has people looking for ways to get in on the action but the truth is it isn't anything new, it is something that has been around for years.
6 Things Stanford Uni Taught Me About Facilitating Online
If you are a trainer, a teacher, or working from home, facilitating online is something that you have been doing for some time now. And, although we have had a lot of practice over the past couple of years, there are still times when facilitating online can be daunting. After participating in four days of online workshops with Stanford University, there were some key strategies that I learned from these facilitators that I will implement moving forward.
Design Thinking For Your Life
Have you ever thought about why you do what you do? Not just in your career, but in your life itself? How your views, sense of identify and values inform what you do? Or, have you tried to make a change and not been able to sustain it? This isn't uncommon and you are definitely not alone. Bill Burnett and Dave Evans recognised a need for a space where you could answer these questions by applying design thinking principles to your life, so they created a credit bearing unit at Stanford University.
Experience Matters - Let’s Not Go Back
Do you remember pre-COVID days where much more was face-to-face and working remotely was a luxury? Fast forward to today and we are going 'back' to classrooms, going 'back' to work, with some people craving for what 'was'. Let's not go back to the way it was, but look at ways in which we can move forward. Opportunity knocks!
Your Privacy Matters: So, What are Cookies?
Data privacy is more relevant than ever and it is your decision on what information you want to expose to others, isn't it? Probably not. When you access a website there is a cookie message; have you ever just blindly accepted without giving it a second thought? Or, have you ever thought, I wonder what happens if I decline, but accept anyway? I know I have. I am going to explain to you why you should never just blindly accept all cookies all of the time.
